Abstract
This capstone project examines the current state of mental health services at North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT), the largest Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in the United States. Through a quality improvement initiative, a survey was conducted among students, alumni, and staff to assess awareness, accessibility, and effectiveness of the university’s Counseling Services. Findings highlighted moderate satisfaction, concerns about counselor availability, and a need for expanded service hours and outreach. Guided by the Health Belief Model, the project explores the cultural and structural barriers that influence students’ willingness to seek mental health support. The analysis identifies gaps in service delivery and provides evidence-based recommendations to enhance accessibility, reduce stigma, and improve overall mental health outcomes. Key strategies include the integration of telehealth services, peer support programs, and leadership-driven resource optimization. This project offers a framework for improving mental health infrastructure at HBCUs and emphasizes the importance of culturally responsive care and strategic leadership in fostering campus wellness.
