Abstract
In response to the complex clinical environments respiratory therapy students face, there is a need for hands-on learning experiences that closely replicate real-life scenarios. There is a significant gap in the literature regarding respiratory therapy simulation-based training. A new simulation training program is being developed for Catawba Valley Community College’s (CVCC) respiratory therapy program to address this gap. The simulation training program will enhance critical thinking, decision-making, and technical skills by integrating realistic simulated respiratory case scenarios into the curriculum each semester of the two-year program. Central to the simulated program design are high and mid-fidelity multi-functional patient simulators and task trainers located at the Valley SIM Healthcare Simulation Center on CVCC’s main campus, and other simulation modalities. METHODS: Data was collected through an online survey, and in discussion with recent graduates and current second-year respiratory students at an accredited respiratory therapy program. The survey provided a mix of eight Likert-type scale and text questions regarding students’ perception of currently used simulated case studies and skill development. RESULTS: Six current seniors and two recent graduates from the program were surveyed. The study findings showed that the overall perceptions of recent graduates and current senior students were similar. Approximately 83% feel the currently used respiratory simulated scenarios helped them feel more prepared for clinical placement. 25% of the surveyed respondents felt their critical-thinking skills had improved using the current respiratory simulated case study scenarios. Students provided additional feedback regarding types of respiratory scenarios and topics that they would like to add for future simulated case studies.
